Notes on community data sets

by Jeannine Cavender-Bares last modified 2009-08-12 16:15

Notes from SWK and JCB on community data sets - includes description of scales, necessary formatting, etc.

Notes on community data -desire for spatial data - individual plants or lat-lon for samples - do next *indicates site skipped by SWK

BNZ -JCB suggest aggregate by sum of cover, currently by mean cover within category

ARCH -JCB suggest include communities just by herbaceous to allow smallest scale? missing otherwise?

ARCTIC -data are biomass harvests -paste together - each dir. contains quadrats from a separate habitat type? -blocks are 5x10m, quadrats are 20cmx20cm. -pick latest year from the multi-year dataset -time series

ARIZONA -use Arizona_Wentworth stand data_spp list.xls -use %cover -stands are patches - no other scales -use stands 1-60, delete cruft

*FIA -PLOT is the patch, SUBP is the plot -separate site for each site by FIA included in directory -data appear to be individual tree coords?

KANSAS LTREB -"for conference oct 9.xls" is filename -used most recent year (2002) -veg type is patch size, patch is a patch (aka island within block), plot is plots (1x1) in patches

*HARVARD FOREST -sort out later - actually 3 datasets

COWEETA -in metadata -has individual tree spatial locs

LUQUILLO -plots are 20x20m quadrats -has spatial data

NMINN (Reich) -Tree plots.xls, Herb data95-97, stand info -veg type is stand cover type from plot data, patch is our plot, herb data only are plots -aggregate herb data into plots (his plots our patch) -note cover class is wonky - abundances not true abundances! had to sum count by class.

NIWOT -nwt-phyloecological.xls -com type is vegtype, plots are patches

*BCI -agg into 20x20m same as luquillo

PNW_Halpern -split into 2 datasets - one in mt hood one in willamette nf -500 square meter plots are patches. no other scales available (although sampling was in 2 different national forests - ??)

*SERC_Data -like a 50ha plot - split into 20x20m quadrats - trees only -call these plots -do not distribute data publicly -exclude SD (standing dead)

*Mississippi -desoto - 3 veg types (upland, bog, swamp), places within each (e.g. farside), 10 50x50cm quadrats in each place. -nomenclature/taxonomy different in the three veg types - need to combine/clean up -HERBS ONLY

Kembel grassland -2 vegtypes (fescue/mixedgrass), my plot = our patch

*Peet NC -data set too huge - swamps all others. also issue with taxonomy, would need extensive cleaning.

Datasets for which there is a species list but no community data -Konza -Cedar Creek -Cornwell -NFlorida plots Cavender-Bares -SedgwickPlots_HarpoleSuding -BCI_26_Herb_species
